How to Type Faster
The most reliable path to faster typing is regular, accurate practice. Learn the home row, keep your eyes on the text, slow down when errors rise, and measure progress under repeatable conditions.
1. Learn Touch Typing
Place your fingers on the home row: left hand on ASDF, right hand on JKL;. Return to this position after every keystroke. This builds muscle memory so you can type without looking at the keyboard.
2. Focus on Accuracy First
Speed comes naturally once you stop making mistakes. Aim for 95%+ accuracy before pushing for speed. Every error costs time to correct and breaks your rhythm.
3. Practice Daily in Short Sessions
Ten minutes per day is more effective than one long session per week. Your brain builds motor patterns during rest between sessions. Use the daily challenge to build a habit.
4. Seven-Day Practice Plan
- Day 1: Take the 1-minute test to establish your baseline WPM and accuracy.
- Day 2: Practice your weak keys for 10 minutes.
- Day 3: Complete the daily challenge.
- Day 4: Play TIPING Race on Easy to practice speed under pressure.
- Day 5: Practice weak keys again — check if your accuracy improved.
- Day 6: Complete the daily challenge and compare with Day 3.
- Day 7: Take the 1-minute test again and compare with Day 1.
5. Speed Benchmarks
- 20 WPM — Beginner, still learning key positions
- 40 WPM — Average, comfortable for daily computer use
- 60 WPM — Above average, productive for most tasks
- 80 WPM — Fast, efficient for extended typing
- 100+ WPM — Professional-level speed
See the WPM chart for detailed benchmarks and typing accuracy for accuracy tips.
